The Sea Fairies is the story of one girls journey to a magical underwater land.
A girl named “Tiny Trot” loves the sea. She and her best friend, retired sailor Capn Bill, spend all their time in or on the ocean.
They have seen many creatures, but never a mermaid, which Trot would dearly love to meet.
When her wish is granted one day, she is amazed to learn that the mermaids are in fact good fairies, and they will let her and Capn Bill visit their home beneath the waves.
Capn Bill is less than enthusiastic, but wont let his little friend go on her own.
They are taken by mermaids for a visit to their magical, undersea kingdom.
While there, they are temporarily given the tails of mer-beings to allow them to get around easier. They tour the realms of the Mermaid Queen.
While on the way to visit her overlord, however, they are abducted by an evil wizard and must devote their energies to staying alive until they are either rescued or find a way to escape.
In 1910, Baum hoped to end the Oz series and follow with a new series about a little girl named Trot and her sailor companion, Cap’n Bill.
The Sea Fairies (1911) was the first book in the projected series and took Trot and Cap’n Bill under the sea where they had adventures with mermaids and other fantastic creatures.
It was followed by Sky Island (1912) and then Baum returned to the Oz titles. He brought Trot and Cap’n Bill to Oz in the Scarecrow of Oz (1915).
